The
story of a Swiss girl who becomes an
Section Officer in Photography in the WAAF
by
Barbara
Dallas
Born to a German actress mother and Swiss
artist father, Barbara (Bamby) Dallas’s life, (née Schmidbauer
and Bamberger) was destined to be anything but straightforward.
Part One (1921-41) tells of her humble life in Upper Silesia;
and then her school days, after her mother’s second marriage to a
Merchant Banker of Jewish origin, in a Pestalozzi school in the Reinland
and a finishing school in Switzerland. When the Nazis took over the Bank
1938, her parents fled to England, and Barbara joined them travelling alone
via Berlin and Amsterdam just in time for World War Two …
Even thought her parents were
Enemy Aliens, she joined the WAAF as a photographer, and met her Army pilot
husband.
Part Two (1941-45) is a transcript of Bamby’s
diary, written whilst serving in the WAAF. She met an Army Pilot during
the war and they married just after VE Day. Ian’s family insisted
he join the family firm of Insurance Brokers, but it enabled them to bring
up a family in comfort.
In Part Three (1945-2005) we see
that Barbara’s life was never going to be problem or adventure free…
We also learn more about her very young childhood
from her stepmother and stepbrother, and the fate of those who did not escape
to or stay in England.
